Along with picking your Venue (and photographer of course!) the task of picking the perfect dress for your wedding day can be both incredible and challenging.
Many brides to be can feel anxious or uneasy on their dress journey, not knowing where to start of what to expect. I hope to introduce you to the world of the bridal boutique and help you to feel more prepared and ready to enjoy picking THE dress!
We visited Leigh Hetherington Bridal in Newcastle City Centre. The boutique is located in one of the lovely large buildings on Old Eldon Square. She welcomed us into her boutique to check out her stunning dresses and have a chat!
Thanks for letting us take over your boutique today haha, I know we arranged to come in advance, is this something brides should do if they would like to view your dresses?

That sounds easy enough! So once a bride has booked her appointment with you, what should she expect?
She should expect a friendly and inviting welcome, with knowledgable assistants to guide her through our vast range of beautiful dresses and accessories.
At Leigh Hetherington we felt spoilt for choice! There were so many beautiful dresses to choose from. There was also lots of hair accessories too which we loved, along with veil and jacket options, in particular a stunning lace biker style jacket that we all swooned over. We loved that there was a wide size range of shoes to try on with the dresses and that Leigh was on hand to help us choose the best dress for the style we wanted.
We picked loads of dresses the try on our bride, how many dresses to brides typically pick to try?
Most brides will try on between 6 and 10 dresses when they visit us.
And on average, how often do brides looking for their perfect dress find ‘the one’ on their first visit?
Many of our brides find ‘the one’ on their first visit to us. We think this is because we offer an array of gowns by many designers and cater for all different looks from contemporary, traditional, bohemian, elegant to sexy. We also offer a bespoke service for the bride who wants something different and unique. We can also customise and alter dresses to exactly what the bride wants with our talented in house sewing team.

As well as bespoke designs all of our designs are customisable and we have our in house designer who can guide the bride through all of the options.
I’ve really enjoyed hanging out with you and quizzing you about your boutique, I’d love everyone to get to know you a bit better – How did you start on your path to designing dresses and owning your own bridal boutique?
I studied fashion at Northumbira University, although my love for fashion and creating things started long before then. I’ve always had a love for exquisite fabrics, attention to detail and ensuring the garment fits perfectly. I realised after a few years in the industry that I wanted to create my own collections and so I started my business in 2001 and I have never looked back. I’ve met so many wonderful people during my career with many becoming friends. It really is a lovely job.
It was obvious Leigh has incredible taste in beautiful fabrics and her eye for detail oozes through in the intricate embroidery, lace and beading on her dresses. She helped us pick the best dress for our model that embodied our theme and fit her perfectly.
Your passion for creating beautiful garments with attention to detail is wonderfully obvious, but what do you love most about what you do?
I love working with a bride and creating an individual dress just for her.Seeing the dress come to life from a sketch to the finished garment. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a bride in one of your designs and knowing that you have made her day that little bit more special.
Leigh was kind enough to share some of her sketches with us, we loved the boho feel to these designs! Leigh also told us that dresses with a bohemian feel are super hot right now.
I hear you! I love photographing everyones reaction the the dress when she is ready to walk down the aisle! It’s such a special part of the day.
I also find when I get talking to Brides about their dress picking experience a lot of them felt like they had no idea what to expect when starting to look for their dress, can you offer any advice to help them before they come?
Although it’s good to come with ideas, having looked through magazines, Pinterest etc, its best to have an open mind and try on things that maybe you would never have thought to try, a lot of the time a bride can be very pleasantly surprised!
Also we ask brides not to wear fake tan when they come in for fittings as this can mark the dresses.
Randomly – cats or dogs?
Leigh Hetherington Bridal Boutique is set apart from others with over 20 years experience in the industry and a love for all things bridal. They have a design and creative studio directly above the showroom with a talented team of creatives who are there to ensure that each dress is fitted to perfection. They have a made to measure service, customisation options and alterations which are all done in-house. Their focus is on genuinely giving brides a lovely experience and help guide her through their range of dresses and options until she finds the one that is perfect for her. I can certainly say that we experienced this first hand.
The Dress that we found for our model was a beautiful tea length design with stunning lace detail. You can check out how amazing it looks in the Making Magic | The Dale Manor styled shoot gallery.
