Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

So, you’re on the hunt for a wedding photographer in the North East?

Whether you're tying the knot in Newcastle, Durham, or Northumberland, one of the biggest decisions you'll make (aside from saying “I do,” of course) is choosing someone to capture your day.

Your wedding photos will be the one thing (besides your other half) that lasts forever. But with so many photographers out there, how do you know which one is right for you? You want someone who gets your vibe, makes you feel comfortable, and knows how to capture all the real, unposed, joy-filled moments—not just the picture-perfect ones.

To help, here are 10 questions you should ask your wedding photographer before booking.

1. What’s Your Photography Style?

Every photographer has their own approach, from light and airy portraits to moody, cinematic shots. Some focus on traditional poses, while others (like me!) love a more natural, documentary-style approach—capturing the day as it happens, without awkward posing. If you’re after relaxed wedding photos that feel real, candid, and full of personality, you’ll want someone who specialises in fun, storytelling wedding photography. Make sure you check out their portfolio and see if their style matches what you love.

2. Have You Shot at Our Venue Before?

While it’s always a bonus if your photographer has worked at your venue before, it’s not a dealbreaker if they haven’t.

A good  photographer will know how to scout the best locations and work with any venue, whether it’s a grand country house in Northumberland or a quirky city-centre venue in Durham.

That said, if they have shot there before, ask to see a full gallery! It’ll give you a better idea of what your wedding photos might look like.

3. Every North East wedding photographer offers different packages, so make sure you know what you’re getting. A few things to ask:

What's Included?

  • How many hours of coverage do you include?

  • Do you offer a second photographer?

  • How many edited photos will we receive?

  • Do you offer prints or albums?

4. Can We See a Full Wedding Gallery?

Instagram is great for highlights, but your wedding day is about more than just a handful of ‘wow’ shots. Ask to see a full wedding gallery to get a feel for how they capture the whole day—from the excited chaos of the morning prep to the wild dance floor moments at night.

You want someone who consistently delivers stunning images, not just a few lucky shots!

5. How Do You Handle Bad Weather & Low Light?

Let’s be honest—wedding weather in the North East is unpredictable. Whether you're getting married in Northumberland’s countryside, Newcastle’s city centre, or a rustic barn in Durham, there’s always a chance of rain, wind, or dark indoor spaces.

A professional wedding photographer will have the right gear (and experience!) to handle anything. If it pours, you want someone who embraces the moment rather than panicking about their camera getting wet!

7. How Long Will It Take to Get Our Photos?

Editing wedding photos is a time-consuming process, and turnaround times can vary from a few weeks to a few months. If you’re eager to relive the magic ASAP, ask if they offer sneak peeks—a handful of preview images to keep you going while you wait for the full gallery.

8. Do You Offer a Pre-Wedding Shoot?

A pre-wedding shoot (also called an engagement shoot) is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. If you’re feeling camera-shy, this is the perfect chance to practice and get some beautiful, relaxed portraits at a stunning North East location. Some of my favourite spots for pre-wedding shoots include Newcastle’s Quayside, the beaches of Northumberland, and Durham’s historic streets. If this is something you’re interested in, check if your photographer offers it!
