How to Get Your Family Photos Done Quickly (Without Losing Your Mind)

If there’s one part of the wedding day couples quietly dread, it’s family photos.

You imagine relatives disappearing, people arguing about who should stand where, and someone always being “just at the bar”. Suddenly what was meant to be a quick set of group photos turns into a stressful, shouty mess.

As a wedding photographer in the North East of England, this is one of the biggest problems I help couples avoid.

Why Family Photos Feel So Stressful

When couples start searching for a wedding photographer in the North East, they’re often focused on couple photos. But family photos are the ones that cause the most anxiety.

I regularly hear:
• “Our families are complicated.”
• “Nobody listens to us.”
• “We’re worried it’ll take ages.”
• “What happens if the weather is awful?”

And without a plan, they really can take ages — especially when rain forces everyone inside at the last minute.

My Approach to Organised Wedding Family Photos

My job isn’t just to take the photos. It’s to keep everything calm, efficient and friendly so this part of your wedding doesn’t derail the day.

We Plan It All in Advance

Before your wedding, we’ll build your family photo list together. This is where I gently encourage you to focus on your nearest and dearest. It’s really tempting to include everyone you’ve ever met, but the longer the list, the longer you’re away from your guests.

A good rule of thumb is this:
each group photo takes around 3 minutes on average.

That doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up fast.
• 5 group photos = around 15 minutes
• 10 group photos = around 30 minutes
• 15 group photos = nearly an hour

Seeing it laid out like that helps couples decide what really matters.

Planning for Bad Weather

Because we’re in the North East, we always have a backup plan. Together we’ll think about where your family photos would work best indoors if the weather turns. This might be a bright ceremony room, a staircase, a foyer or even a covered outdoor space. By deciding this in advance, there’s no last-minute panic and no wandering around with 20 relatives looking for somewhere to stand.

I Take Control on the Day

You shouldn’t be the one rounding people up in your wedding outfit. I’ll guide everyone, call out groups clearly and keep things moving so it stays calm and friendly, not chaotic.

Sensitive Family Dynamics Handled Quietly

Divorced parents, step-families, relatives who don’t speak. I’ve worked with every family setup you can imagine, and we’ll plan groupings in a way that keeps things respectful and drama-free.

Why This Changes Everything

When your family photos are planned properly:
  • You’re not shouting names across the venue.

  • Your guests aren’t left standing around confused.

  • You’re back enjoying your wedding in minutes instead of losing half an hour or more.

The Result

You get beautiful photos with the people who matter most. You don’t feel stressed or flustered. You actually enjoy this part of the wedding instead of dreading it.
